Field Refuse Minimisation Standard

Ensure that, wherever practical, plant refuse is left in the field rather than transported to the wash shed or other work areas. This reduces labour, lowers waste-handling overheads, and returns organic matter to the soil.

Steps

  1. Standard Description

    During harvesting and processing of vegetables:

    • Remove soil, outer leaves, and other plant refuse in the field.
    • Do not transport unnecessary plant material to the wash shed.
    • Perform trimming, topping, and cleaning steps on-site whenever conditions

    allow.

    • Only clean produce should arrive at the wash shed.

    Reason: Leaving refuse in the field minimises wash shed waste, reduces handling

    time, and supports soil health by keeping organic matter on-site.

  2. Measurement Method

    Inspect harvested batches on arrival at the wash shed. Confirm:

    • Minimal plant refuse accompanies produce.
    • Most trimming and cleaning steps were completed in the field.
  3. Applies To
    • All crops where field refuse removal is feasible.
    • All staff involved in harvesting and processing.
  4. Review and Maintenance

    Review annually or when wash shed refuse levels increase or field processes

    change.
